Scammer gets $600K from elderly Troy woman who thought she won sweepstakes

A 72 year old woman was conned into thinking she won the publishers clearing house sweepstakes and sent money and high value items to the scammer as she was told money was needed to secure winnings. She made payment with cashiers cheques and deposited money into a Bitcoin ATM that went directly to the scammers account. There is pretty well no chance the money or the items sent will be recovered.

Legitimate lotteries or sweepstakes will not ask you to send money to collect money. In addition, the woman should have contacted Publishers Clearing House directly to verify the wine.

Everyone, especially senior citizens should be very careful in these type of circumstances. Anyone with elderly parents should discuss the situation with them and have them contact you to help verify the validity of any communications for anyone asking the senior for money or personal information.
